About the Pipe Outside Surface Area Calculator

Painting, coating and insulation are all priced per square metre, so surface area drives the cost of finishing a pipe run. This calculator returns outside surface area per metre and for the full run, which you can multiply by your coverage rate to work out litres of paint or square metres of wrap.

How to use it

  1. 01Enter the pipe outside diameter in mm, cm or inches.
  2. 02Enter the length of the run and the number of pieces.
  3. 03Read area per metre and total outside surface area in m².
  4. 04Divide the total area by your paint coverage (m² per litre) to size the order.

Common questions

How do you find the surface area of a pipe?
Outside surface area = π × OD × length. Keep OD and length in the same units, or let the calculator convert them for you.
Does this include the pipe ends or the bore?
No. It is the external cylindrical area only, which is what painting, wrapping and insulation contractors measure.

This calculator is free to use and built for Indian metric practice — weights in kilograms and kg per metre, dimensions in millimetres. Omegha Steel supplies pipes, fittings, flanges and fasteners from Kolkata to projects across India; send us the sizes you have calculated and we will quote on them.
