Formula used

A = π/4 × (OD² − ID²)  |  F = A × y + π/4 × ID² × P

A is the gasket contact area in mm², y the required seating stress in MPa and P the internal pressure in MPa (entered in bar and converted). The result feeds directly into the bolt torque calculator as the target load per bolt.

Seating stress depends on the gasket material and construction — use the value given by your gasket supplier. This simplified check does not replace a full flange design calculation.

Results are theoretical calculations based on the values you enter. Actual weights and quantities vary with manufacturing tolerances. Confirm requirements with our team before ordering.

About the Gasket Area & Seating Load Calculator

A flange joint seals when the bolts deliver enough stress onto the gasket contact area and keep it there under pressure. This calculator returns the annular contact area of a ring gasket, the bolt load for your target seating stress, and the hydrostatic end force that works against it.

How to use it

  1. 01Enter the gasket outside and inside diameters.
  2. 02Enter the target seating stress in MPa from the gasket datasheet.
  3. 03Optionally enter design pressure to see the hydrostatic end force.
  4. 04Read contact area and the total bolt load required, then split it across the bolts.

Common questions

How is gasket contact area calculated?
Area = π/4 × (OD² − ID²) for a flat ring gasket, with both diameters in millimetres.
What seating stress should I use?
Take it from the gasket manufacturer's datasheet for the specific material — compressed fibre, graphite, PTFE and spiral wound all differ significantly.

This calculator is free to use and built for Indian metric practice — weights in kilograms and kg per metre, dimensions in millimetres. Omegha Steel supplies pipes, fittings, flanges and fasteners from Kolkata to projects across India; send us the sizes you have calculated and we will quote on them.
